FUTURE STORIES
2024, Spray paint, plinth paint, community artwork. 52 m. x 2,5 m.
The mural addresses climate change from the perspective of reducing carbon dioxide emissions.
The sketches for the mural were made in workshops organized for residents of the Kivenlahti area of Espoo. Workshops were called The Future House, Protection Tree and The Car of Tomorrow.
The workshops brought together the life experiences and ideas of young and senior citizens. The workshops discussed future living and mobility in the city, parks and trees. Their goal was to imagine a radically different future that does not necessarily seem realistic at the moment. Art offered a place for imagination, vision and hope.
The participants designed future carbon-neutral residential buildings and means of transport that use energy sources other than fossil fuels. In addition, they drew trees to be protected.
The workshops included participants from Meritori School, Maininki School, Merikartano Assisted Living and the Seniorisiveltimet group. The work was commissioned by the City of Espoo's Culture as part of the Future Stories concept.
The project was implemented by artists from the Mimmit peinttaa art collective, who also acted as workshop instructors in addition to painting the underpass. The project coordinator was Leena Pukki, who was also responsible for the conceptualization and artistic design of the work.
